Child drowns in Ontonagon County

ONTONAGON, MI— A 7-year-old boy drowned in Ontonagon County’s Misery Bay on Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies say around 5 p.m. they received a report of a missing boy. There were concerns he might have drowned near the boat launch on the bay east of Ontonagon.

Officials launched a search and found the boy in the water. They immediately administered CPR and the child was taken to UPHS-Portage, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the boy, out of respect to the family.

Assisting at the scene were Superior Search and Rescue, Baraga Search and Rescue, Gogebic Search and Rescue, MSP (Calumet) K-9, Michigan DNR, National Coast Guard, Houghton County Marine Patrol, Mercy Ambulance, numerous volunteers, and Ontonagon County Victim Services.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
