Head-on crash in Mackinac County kills two

NEWTON TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people were killed in a traffic crash in Mackinac County early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 1:15 a.m. to US-2 near H-33 in Newton Township. Two vehicles had collided head-on and come to rest in opposing ditches. All three occupants were trapped in their vehicles.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital and later transferred to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

Officials believe speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police accident investigators.

No names are being released at this time.

Assisting at the scene were the Portage Township and Garfield Township Fire Departments, Michigan State Police, and Portage EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
