Cyclist injured in M-28 crash with vehicle

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI— A Chocolay Township woman is injured, after her bicycle was hit by a vehicle on M-28 Wednesday.

Chocolay Township Police say it happened around 2:10 p.m. near Superior Street.

A 75-year-old woman was cycling eastbound on the south shoulder of the highway when she tried to cross the road over to Superior Street. She pulled directly into the path of an eastbound vehicle.

The cyclist’s injuries were severe but didn’t appear to be life-threatening. She was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle, both Gwinn residents, were not injured.

Assisting at the scene were Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Chocolay Township Fire/Rescue, and UP Health System EMS. Chocolay Township Police send special thanks to the citizens and doctor that stopped to help.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
