House explosion kills Limestone Township man

ALGER COUNTY, MI— An Alger County man has died from injuries he sustained when a propane stove exploded in his house.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office says on August 24th, Randall Bertram, 74, of Limestone Township was trying to light the stove when the explosion happened. The blast ignited the home and his vehicle.

Bertram had to walk to a neighbor’s house nearly a mile away to report the incident.

The Rock River Township Fire Department, Mathias Township Fire Department, Rock River EMS, Alger County EMS, and the Alger County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Bertram was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment. He later died of significant injuries.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigator is also investigating the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
