Breitung Township crash claims one life

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP, MI— One person was killed and another injured in a Dickinson County crash Saturday.

Just before 3 a.m., the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received an Automated Alert that the owner of an Apple iPhone was in a severe crash and was not responding to their phone. Deputies were dispatched to Upper Pine Creek Road in Breitung Township.

Investigation indicates a Chevy Camaro driven by a 20-year-old Niagara, Wisconsin man was westbound when the driver lost control. The vehicle went off the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 19-year-old Iron Mountain man, was taken to Marshfield-Dickinson Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Iron Mountain Police, Michigan State Police, Kingsford Public Safety, Iron Mountain Fire Department, Breitung Fire, Integrity Ambulance, and R&R Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
