Fatal crash reported east of Ewen on M-28

EWEN, MI— A 17-year-old girl has been killed in a traffic accident in Ontonagon County.

Sheriff’s deputies and Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post were notified Thursday around 8:35 p.m. of a crash on M-28 east of Ewen.

Upon arrival, police learned a semi driven by a 42-year-old man collided head-on with a passenger vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl. The teen was treated by SONCO ambulance but died of her injuries at the scene. The driver of the semi wasn’t injured.

Traffic was rerouted for several hours as investigators and medical personnel handled the scene.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with MSP assisting. Accident investigators from the Wakefield and Calumet posts responded to the scene, along with the MSP Accident Reconstructionist out of Marquette to help determine the cause of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.

Also responding to the scene were DNR Conservation Officers, the Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Bruce Crossing and Ewen Fire Departments, the Ontonagon County Road Commission, Al’s Auto Towing, and Superior Services Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
