Iron River house explosion kills 80-year-old man

IRON RIVER, MI— A man was killed when an Iron River house exploded Saturday night.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to 820 Cayuga Street. Officers found the residence mostly destroyed with debris scattered as far as three blocks away.

The Iron River Fire Department and several others from Dickinson County responded to the scene and searched for victims. Troopers from neighboring posts, along with MSP K9 units and the 8th District MSP Fire Investigator, were also called to assist. They found the body of an 80-year-old man. He had just moved into the home from Florida.

While authorities do not suspect criminal activity at this time, the explosion remains under investigation. The Iron River City Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the MSP Fire Investigator.

The Iron River Police Department requests the public please stay behind the barricaded areas while the scene is being investigated.
