Boy dies after snowmobile goes through ice in Thompson Township

THOMPSON TOWNSHIP, MI— A teenaged boy has died in a snowmobile accident in Schoolcraft County.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post say it happened Wednesday around 6:35 p.m. on the south shore of Indian Lake in Thompson Township.

Troopers say a snowmobile carrying two teen boys went through the ice about a mile from the shoreline. Family members tried to rescue the boys, but ended up in the water themselves.

Officers from Manistique Public Safety and Sault Tribal Police were able to rescue two of the family members and one of the teens. They were taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment of hypothermia and released.

Officers found the snowmobile driver in the lake about 6.5 hours later. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Natural Resources, Thompson Township Fire Department, and Michigan State Police from the Manistique Detachment and Gladstone Post.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
