Angler rescued from floating ice in Delta County

DELTA COUNTY, MI— A man was rescued from an ice floe on Big Bay de Noc after it broke off and floated away from shore Monday.

Around 12:25 p.m., the Delta County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to an area near Fayette State Park. The man had walked onto the ice to go fishing and was about 300 to 400 yards from shore.

An airboat from Masonville Township rescued the man and brought him back to shore. He was not injured.

Deputies remind residents that ice conditions are constantly changing. Those who go out onto the ice should take precautions to keep themselves safe.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
