Teen dies in fiery Ely Township crash

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI— One person died in a single-vehicle accident in Ely Township early Sunday morning.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post were dispatched around 12:05 a.m. to County Road 482 near County Road CM. They found a vehicle about 30 yards off the road fully engulfed in flames. The white Ford SUV was lying on its right side and appeared to have gone through numerous large trees before coming to rest.

Troopers immediately attempted to extinguish the fire and render aid to any occupants. The lone passenger, a 17-year-old girl from the area, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted by the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, UPHS-Bell, Rescue 131, and the Marquette City Police.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
