Crash involving young driver cuts power to parts of Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— Electrical outages were reported in Iron Mountain early Wednesday morning, after a 16-year-old driver hit a power pole.

Around 12:50 a.m., Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post responded to a single-vehicle crash. The vehicle had struck a utility pole, causing power outages throughout the city.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated.

Breitung Township Fire and EMS responded to the scene, along with WE Energies and Spectrum. Troopers were assisted by the Iron Mountain Police Department and Kingsford Public Safety.

The incident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
