Car hits power pole in Marquette Township, bursts into flames

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI— Power has been restored in Marquette Township, after a vehicle hit a power pole and went up in flames Wednesday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 7 p.m. to County Road 550 near the southern parking lot of Sugar Loaf Mountain. The crash had happened seconds prior to deputies’ arrival.

The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was able to get out safely before the Subaru Outback became engulfed in flames.

The fire spread to the power pole and the start of the tree line. County Road 550 was shut down for several hours due to the risk of the pole and power lines falling.

The driver was evaluated at the scene and refused further treatment.

After the fire was extinguished, Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association replaced the utility pole.

Deputies were assisted by the Marquette Fire Department, Marquette Township EMS, Marquette Detailing, the Marquette County Road Commission, and Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association.
