Man dies from injuries sustained in Iron Mountain snowmobile crash

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— A man was killed and a 9-year-old injured in a snowmobile crash in Breitung Township Tuesday evening.

Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain post responded around 5:30 p.m. to an accident near Knight Avenue and South Park Avenue. It involved a 43-year-old man and 9-year-old passenger.

The snowmobile struck a tree and the two were ejected from the machine. Neither was wearing a helmet.

The driver sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Marshfield Medical Center and later transported to Green Bay, where he succumbed to his injuries. The passenger sustained minor injuries.

Speed and loss of control appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were The Iron Mountain Police Department, Kingsford Public Safety Department, Breitung Township Fire Department, and Integrity Ambulance.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
