Indiana man dies in Alger County snowmobile accident

AUTRAIN TOWNSHIP, MI— A missing snowmobiler was found dead in AuTrain Township Tuesday.

Alger County dispatch received a call around 9:25 p.m. that a 59-year-old Indiana man had not returned after riding.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County Rescue 21, and Michigan State Police launched a search. Wednesday around 1:05 a.m. they found the snowmobiler deceased on Trail #8, about two miles west of M-94.

Investigation indicated the man failed to negotiate a curve and left the trail, causing the snowmobile to overturn. The victim sustained fatal injuries.

Officials say speed, but not alcohol, contributed to the crash.

The man’s name is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
