Driver killed when ORV hits tree in Sands Township

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— A Marquette County man has been killed in an ORV crash.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched Wednesday around 6:10 p.m. to a trail off Young’s Road in Sands Township on a report that a side-by-side had struck a tree.

The 57-year-old Sands Township driver was the only occupant. Responding personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

Alcohol, speed, and failure to wear a seat belt are believed to be factors in the crash.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Michigan State Police, Sands Township EMS/Fire, Rescue 131, and UPHS EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
