One dead, one injured in Drummond Island crash

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI— A single-vehicle crash has claimed the life of an eastern U.P. resident.

Monday around 8:48 p.m., Chippewa County Central Dispatch received a 911 call about an accident on Drummond Island. Sheriff’s deputies say a Chevy Impala left the roadway on Warners Cove, struck a culvert, then crashed into some trees.

The driver and passenger were young men from Drummond Island. Both were transported from the scene, but the driver did not survive the crash. The passenger sustained life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation shows excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. Neither man appeared to be wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Drummond Island Fire/Ems, Central Dispatch and the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office VSU.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
