Boy on bicycle killed when 16-year-old driver hits him with vehicle

AURORA, WI— A 12-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in Florence County, Wisconsin Monday.

Deputies responded to the accident on County Highway N in the town of Aurora around 6:15 p.m. It caused a power outage in the area.

Officials say a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male left the roadway and struck a boy on a bicycle and a power pole. The child was later pronounced dead at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson.

The driver and his juvenile passenger were not injured.

Speed, driver inexperience, and operating while impaired are suspected factors in the accident. The investigation is ongoing and names will not be released.

County Highway N was reopened to traffic early Tuesday morning following an investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Assisting at the scene were the Aurora Fire Department, Florence County EMS, Florence County Highway, Florence County Emergency Management, WE Energies and several good Samaritans who lived nearby.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
