Bergland Township crash kills one over the weekend

BERGLAND TOWNSHIP, MI— A Wakefield man was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ontonagon County on Saturday.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. on M-28 near Timberline Rentals in Bergland Township.

The 81-year-old Wakefield resident was eastbound when he tried to turn left into a private driveway. He struck a vehicle driven by a 61-year-old Minnesota man.

The 81-year-old man was taken to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. A 63-year-old female passenger in the other vehicle was also taken to Aspirus Ironwood, then airlifted to another hospital for further care. The Minnesota man was injured and sought medical treatment.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation, with support from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post and the MSP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. Additional assistance at the scene was provided by SONCO, Beacon Ambulance, and the Bergland Fire Department.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
