NPS boat runs aground on Hancock break wall

HANCOCK, MI— A National Park Service vessel ran aground in the Keweenaw over the weekend.

Saturday around 12:30 a.m., the 25-foot Peregrine ran aground on the break wall at the north end of the Keweenaw Upper Entrance in Hancock. NPS staff were transporting a visitor with a medical emergency from Isle Royale National Park to the mainland to seek further medical care when the accident occurred.

A 45-foot response boat from U.S. Coast Guard Station Portage rescued everyone aboard.

The Peregrine was towed to Houghton on Saturday afternoon. Officials say there was no fuel or oil discharge.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
