Motorcycle crash claims life of Escanaba man

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI— An Escanaba man was killed in a Forsyth Township motorcycle crash on Friday.

Township Police were dispatched around 4:30 p.m. to M-35 near County Road 557. They determined the motorcycle driver, Glenn Varney, 58, had been westbound when he lost control of the bike, ran off the roadway, and struck a telephone pole.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, Varney was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say at this time it’s unknown if any other factors contributed to the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call the Forsyth Township Police Department at 906-346-9224.

Assisting in the incident were Forsyth Fire & EMS, UPHS-Marquette, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Marquette County Central Dispatch, and several bystanders who initially stopped to render aid.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
