Chippewa County building explodes, cause under investigation

Kinross Township Volunteer Fire Department

KINROSS TOWNSHIP, MI— The 4-H building at the Kinross Township Community Park was destroyed by an explosion and subsequent fire on Sunday.

The Kinross Township Volunteer Fire Department was notified of the explosion near Fair Road around 7:44 p.m. Firefighters found the building engulfed and called for assistance from nearby departments. Crews from Rudyard, Pickford, Dafter, Bruce Township, Soo Township, Trout Lake, Bay Mills, Superior, and Sugar Island responded.

Also assisting at the scene were Norris Contracting, the Chippewa County Victim Services Unit, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Kinross EMS, Kinross DPW, Cloverland Electric, Autore Oil, DTE, and Central Dispatch.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Residents are asked to stay away from the site at this time.
