Names of men lost in Copper Harbor canoe accident released

EAGLE RIVER, MI— The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of two men who died when their canoe overturned in Lake Superior on June 28.

The bodies of Devin Wright, 33, of Chassell, and Mathew Wickstrom, 36, of Laurium were recovered after the canoe capsized near Copper Harbor. A third occupant made it to shore to contact authorities.

Assisting deputies in the search were Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard, Michigan DNR, and the Michigan State Police dive team.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
