Woman killed in M-28 crash near Newberry

PENTLAND TOWNSHIP, MI— A 68-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle crash in Luce County last week.

The Luce County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Thursday around 3:40 p.m. on M-28 near Pentland Township. Preliminary investigation indicates one of the vehicles involved crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. One of the vehicles caught fire as a result of the impact.

A woman passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers were taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is assisting in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
