MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI— A Michigan State Police trooper was struck by a vehicle while investigating a crash in Marquette Township Wednesday.
Around 9:45 a.m., troopers responded to US-41 near Midway Drive. Preliminary investigation reveals a 56-year-old man was eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a westbound vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman. The first vehicle hit a guardrail and came to rest in the turn lane of the highway.
As a trooper investigated the first crash, another vehicle on the highway tried to avoid a secondary collision near the scene but was unsuccessful. It struck a vehicle that was involved in the secondary crash, then hit the trooper, who had to maneuver onto the hood of the car to avoid serious injury. The vehicle, driven by a 57-year-old Laurium woman, then struck a vehicle involved in the initial crash.
The trooper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, treated and released.
The Laurium woman was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Motorists who violate the “move over” law and cause injury to a police officer, firefighter, or other emergency response personnel, could be charged with a felony (up to two years in prison) and/or a $1,000 fine.
The MSP say this is a reminder to slow down and move over for emergency personnel.
