Wisconsin man dies in mine-related accident in Ontonagon County

ROCKLAND TOWNSHIP, MI— The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Wisconsin man in a gravel pit.

Deputies were dispatched Thursday around 2:20 p.m. to an accident in the Highpoint Gravel Pit in Rockland Township. When they arrived, the victim, Terry Gene Johnson, 50, of Manawa, was pronounced dead by EMS personnel on the scene.

The incident is being further investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. No further details will be released until the investigation is complete.

Assisting at the scene were SONCO Ambulance, Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR Law Enforcement, the Rockland Volunteer Fire Department, the Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Cane Funeral Home.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
