Vehicle hits, kills worker in Sands Township construction zone

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a construction worker on M-553 in Sands Township.

Deputies say the accident happened Monday around 1:35 p.m. A southbound vehicle apparently left its lane and sideswiped a Hooper construction truck that was parked on the shoulder. The vehicle then struck a worker who was making sure the equipment was secured to a trailer being pulled by the truck. The vehicle continued southbound, striking a second Hooper vehicle that was completely off the roadway.

The Hooper employee was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

M-553 was closed for several hours while officials investigated the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to slow down and pay extra attention in construction zones.
