Name of worker killed by vehicle in Marquette County construction zone released

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— Police have released the name of the worker who was struck and killed in a Sands Township construction zone this week.

The incident happened Monday afternoon on M-553 near Silver Creek Road.

A southbound vehicle driven by a 48-year-old Gwinn woman sideswiped a Hooper Construction truck on the side of the road, struck a worker, and hit another Hooper truck parked off the roadway.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says Jack Rantanen, 25, of Marquette was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains an active investigation and no other details about the driver are being released at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
