Rapid River woman killed in US-crash

INWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI— One person was killed and four others injured in a crash between a semi and a pickup truck on US-2 in Schoolcraft County Friday.

Michigan State Police from the Manistique Outpost were dispatched around 9:16 p.m. to US-2 near County Road 442 in Inwood Township.

Preliminary investigation shows the pickup containing two adults and three children was westbound when it tried to pass another vehicle in the passing lane during whiteout conditions and on icy roads. It lost control and struck an eastbound semi.

The front seat passenger of the pickup, a 38-year-old Rapid River woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver and one passenger were taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. A back seat passenger sustained serious injuries and was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, then flown by Guardian Flight to Children’s Wisconsin hospital in Milwaukee for further treatment. Another passenger was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of a head injury. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Manistique troopers were assisted by the MSP Gladstone Post, MSP Aviation Unit, MSP NRCC dispatchers, Inwood Township Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, Tri Star EMS, and the Manistique Public Safety Department.
