Man charged with drunk driving, causing death in Bay Mills crash

BAY MILLS TOWNSHIP, MI— A downstate man is in custody, following a fatal two-vehicle crash in Chippewa County.

Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post were dispatched Monday around 10:48 a.m. to W. Lakeshore Drive near W. Lake Street in Bay Mills Township.

Troopers say a Chevrolet Trailblazer was westbound on West Lakeshore when it crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound Ford Fiesta. The driver of the Fiesta, a 62-year-old woman from the downstate town of Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Trailblazer, a 46-year-old man from McBain, Michigan, displayed signs of intoxication during the investigation. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated, causing death and operating while license suspended.

The man was taken to a hospital in the Soo, then transferred to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey for further treatment. He remains in custody of the Michigan State Police and will be lodged in the Chippewa County Jail upon medical clearance.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
