WILSON, MI— A 12-year-old boy has died from injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian accident in Menominee County last week.
The Hannahville Tribal Police Department says it happened on September 15 around 9:10 p.m. in Wilson.
Lifesaving measures were performed at the scene. The child was taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital, then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he later died of his injuries.
The Escanaba Daily Press reports the child is identified as 12-year-old Elijah McMillan. Tribal members in Hannahville and Escanaba lit fires to help his soul find its way. Since he passed, a walking-on fire is being tended.
Police say there is no evidence of negligence by the driver, who has been fully cooperative throughout the investigation.
Assisting in the incident were the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police accident investigators, the Harris Fire Department, UPHS-Rampart, Menominee County Central Dispatch, and the Menominee County Victim Services Unit.
The Hannahville Tribal Police Department is extending its condolences to everyone involved in the accident.
