Chippewa County man charged in pickup/bicycle crash in the Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Chippewa County man was arrested Monday following a crash between a pickup truck and a bicyclist in Sault Ste. Marie.

On September 21, the Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of the Fort Street Bridge. The pickup was no longer at the scene when officers arrived.

The bicyclist was seriously injured. They were taken to the hospital and have since been released. The truck was later recovered by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark McLeod, 44, of Dafter turned himself in on Monday at 41st District Court. He was arraigned that day on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and failure to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident. Bond was set at $50,000.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department.
