Suspected drunk driver hits, seriously injures Delta County couple in their yard

DELTA COUNTY, MI— Two Delta County residents were seriously injured Friday when a suspected drunk driver struck them in their own yard.

Around 9:39 p.m., troopers from the Gladstone post responded to a crash in the area of US-2/41 near I.75 Lane. Police say the driver left the road, crossed a driveway, and struck a man and a woman, pinning them against their parked car about 20 to 25 yards from the highway. The driver then continued through the yard and back onto the road.

A Delta County Sheriff’s Office deputy found the driver about two miles from the crash scene. He displayed signs of intoxication.

Matthew Smith, 69, of Escanaba was arrested and lodged in the Delta County Jail. He’s charged with operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, resulting in serious impairment or death, failure to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident, and failure to stop after a collision.

The people who were struck were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
