MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette Police say a person has been swept off the Black Rocks at Presque Isle Park.

The department responded Thursday around 2:53 p.m. to the Island. Officers spoke to witnesses, who said a man had been washed off the rocks and into Lake Superior. Strong winds had been whipping up waves all day.

The man was last seen being pulled southward out of Black Rocks cove. The area was checked by first responders, but the victim wasn’t found.

Due to lake conditions, a search on the water could not be conducted. It will be initiated when lake conditions allow.

MPD reminds the public to avoid areas near the lake during inclement weather due to hazardous conditions, which can change in seconds.

Assisting in incident were the Marquette Fire Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Michigan University Police Department, Michigan DNR conservation officers, UPHS-Marquette EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
