Names of couple involved in ORV incident released

By Nicole Walton

Negaunee Township, MI – Authorities have released the names of the Marquette Township man who died and his wife who survived after spending three nights in the woods.

Sheriff's deputies say 62-year-old Daniel and Marsha Hockin were on an ORV excursion Friday in Negaunee Township when their machine became stuck in the mud. Attempts to free the ORV were futile, as were Marsha Hockin's attempts to find help each day. She erected "help" signs pointing to the direction of the incident.

The couple spent three nights in the woods without supplies or proper clothing. Sometime during the ordeal Daniel Hockin succumbed to exposure and prior medical conditions.

Monday morning Marsha Hockin--disoriented and also suffering from exposure--flagged down a passerby on County Road 510 and was able to contact police.

Marsha Hockin was treated and released from Marquette General Hospital. Daniel Hockin's body was recovered the same day.
