Marquette wins award for waterfront safety efforts

By Nicole Walton

Marquette, MI – The City of Marquette has won an award from the Michigan Municipal League.

The city has been given the Region 7 Community Excellence Award for its comprehensive waterfront safety initiative, and now has a chance to win the statewide CEA honor.

The Marquette Waterfront Safety Task Force is partnering with local, state, and federal entities to make the city's 10 miles of coastline safer, following last summer's four drowning deaths.

Efforts include producing videos aimed at children and adults; teaching swimming and water safety; creating maps for hotels indicating safe areas; increased beach signage; and the installation of National Weather Service current meters.

The League's Region 7 covers the entire U.P.
