Marquette's Phil Niemisto statue to spend winter getting refurbished

MARQUETTE, MI— The Phil Niemisto statue in downtown Marquette is getting repaired.

It was removed from the Pocket Park Wednesday and will spend the winter months being restored by artist Earl Senchuk.

Phil was a longtime window washer and flower tender in the downtown area. A statue honoring him was unveiled in the “Phil Niemisto Pocket Park” in 2017. He died the following year.

Once repairs are completed, the statue will return in the spring.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
