Calumet groups receive state preservation award

LANSING, MI— A Houghton County preservation project has received a Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.

At a ceremony Thursday, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist announced the award for the “Bring Back Calumet” initiative. Since 2016, a consortium of partners has developed plans for a series of downtown buildings in the National Historic Landmark District.

Awardees include the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, Village of Calumet, Calumet Downtown Development Authority, Main Street Calumet, Houghton County Land Bank Authority, Keweenaw National Historical Park, and Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
