Body of man who entered Soo canal found near Cloverland power plant

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Officials in Sault Ste. Marie have found the body of a man who jumped into the Cloverland Electric Power Canal last week.

Emergency responders were dispatched Friday on a report a person had entered the water from the Ashmun Street Bridge spanning the canal.

An extensive search operation was conducted over the next several days, using specialized personnel and equipment from local, state, and federal agencies. Officials used two drones, a remotely operated underwater vehicle, an underwater live-view camera system, two canine teams, and side-scan sonar.

The man was found Wednesday, deceased, in the canal near the Cloverland Electric power plant. His name will not be released.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
