Vessels in Sault Ste. Marie still backed up

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Repairs on one of the Soo Locks will take longer than expected.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the MacArthur Lock, closed on July 29 because it wouldn’t shut properly, will be out of operation until about August 19.

As of August 9, 61 ships were delayed a total of 78 hours at the locks.  Shipping companies are experiencing additional delays as they slow down their operations and keep ships at dock to lessen the amount of time they’d have to wait in the Soo.

The Corps is rerouting ships through the Poe Lock.
