Great Lakes bulk carrier to be built in Sturgeon Bay

STURGEON BAY, WI (AP)--   Construction is expected to start this fall on the first Great Lakes bulk carrier to be built in nearly four decades in Sturgeon Bay.

WLUK-TV reports the Interlake Steamship Company and Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding will partner together to build a self-unloading bulk carrier, the first ship built on the Great Lakes to service the Great Lakes since 1983.

The 639-foot ship will transport raw materials to support manufacturing throughout the Great Lakes region.

The new carrier will become the tenth ship The Interlake Steamship Company Fleet operates on the Great Lakes.
