Marquette Chamber votes to dissolve

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Chamber of Commerce will soon be no more.

After nearly five years in operation the Board of Directors voted at its October 4 meeting to dissolve, effective November 1.

Officials say when the interim executive director left earlier this year it became clear the Chamber needed twice the number of members it had to adequately pay a staff person. At the same time the Chamber needed a staff person to adequately serve those members. Over time the Board realized the organization could no longer effectively support its members under that model.

Programs like the Marquette 365 Community Calendar, the Be Local Buy Local program and Ampersand Coworking will continue under other business organizations.

The Chamber Board says with a number of local and regional nonprofits serving area businesses, it is satisfied with its decision.
