Marquette County program urges shoppers to buy locally

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Lake Superior Community Partnership is teaming up with the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Chamber of Commerce to offer a new gift card program to support local businesses as they reopen.

Love on Local aims to promote shopping at Marquette County small businesses. The gift cards can be used at any business location that accepts Visa cards. Part of the card’s $3 fee will be used to market participating businesses.

In order to participate, at least 50 percent of the business must be locally owned; decision-making authority must be vested in local owners; and the business must have a limited number of outlets and geographic range.

Officials say the program is an effort to keep money spent within the community.

Cards will be mailed to residents in whatever dollar amount they wish and are valid for one year after purchase.
