MARQUETTE, MI-- The Marquette Food Co-op has bought the Marquette Baking Company.
Officials say the Co-op intends to use the bakery’s original recipes and
will continue using organic ingredients, as well as wild yeasts and local flour, when possible.
The purchase agreement was signed Wednesday.
In the beginning bread will be sold solely through the Co-op’s storefront. Officials say when recipes and systems are learned and perfected, the retail space on Baraga Avenue will reopen, offering a selection of breads, baked goods, prepared foods from the Co-op’s deli, packaged grocery items, coffee, and drinks.
The bakery is expected to employ several people, including skilled bakers, who are scheduled to undergo 400 hours of training from the previous owners.
