NEGAUNEE, MI— The Negaunee Downtown Development Authority is holding a special meeting next week to gather input about the possible formation of a Social District.
The state recently enacted a new law aimed at spurring economic activity by allowing the on-site sale and off-site consumption of alcohol in designated “Social District” areas. Permits would be granted by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. Businesses could sell alcoholic beverages on their premises to customers, who could then take the drinks to a commons area.
The DDA says it’s exploring the possible establishment of a Social District to support local restaurants, bars, and other businesses, grow economic development, and to supplement outdoor social distancing space when pandemics may occur.
The public meeting takes place Monday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Negaunee Ice Arena.
