New airport name approved by Marquette County officials

MARQUETTE, MI— Sawyer International Airport may be getting a new name.

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners this week approved changing the name to Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport. The change is part of a $20 million rebranding effort.

Expansion of the terminal is on the list of improvements officials want to make to the airport. Its estimated overall cost is around $32 million—$7 million of which would be shouldered by Marquette County.

Officials also want to address flight schedules and improve other airport services.
