UAW strike plan in place

michiganradio.org

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)— The president of the United Auto Workers says the union is prepared to strike if deals with three major auto makers are not reached by 11:59 Thursday night.

But the plan does not guarantee a complete labor halt at Ford, Stellantis and General Motors.

UAW president Shawn fain says the union will use what he’s calling a “stand up strike,” meaning work will stop at certain locations based on where contract talks stand, but not at every facility at once.

The strategy will mean some members will be working without contracts. Fain says it will give the union more power at the bargaining table.

“At the beginning a select few are going to strike… and then as needed more are gonna join in. We’re gonna hit where we need to hit and when we need to hit we’re gonna hit to move mountains.”

Fain says contract talks between the UAW and Detroit’s Big Three are progressing but car companies and the union remain far apart.
