UAW goes on strike

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)— The United Auto Workers union has declared a strike against Detroit’s Big Three automakers.

The car companies delivered last-minute contract offers that auto executives said contained significant wage increases, but UAW President Shawn Fain says the proposals still fell far short of what the union was demanding.

“For the first time in our history we will strike all three of the Big Three at once. We will call on select facilities…locals or units…to stand up and go on strike.”

Several Michigan Democratic lawmakers – including both of the state’s U.S. Senators – issued statements supporting the work stoppage.

President Biden had personally tried to persuade both sides to reach a deal before Thursday night’s deadline. Now, the Biden Administration may offer financial aid to some smaller parts suppliers affected by the strike, which could quickly cost the overall U.S. economy billions of dollars.
