Postal Service to evaluate shifting some operations from Iron Mountain to Green Bay

KINGSFORD, MI— The U.S. Postal Service is conducting a Mail Processing Facility Review of operations at the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) in Kingsford.

It’s part of the Service’s ten-year, $40 billion Delivering for America Plan to modernize the postal network. It’s designed to improve efficiency in mail processing and delivery.

Officials will evaluate the cost savings and efficiency of transferring some mail processing operations currently done at the Iron Mountain P&DC to the Green Bay P&DC. A significant portion of mail collected in Iron Mountain would travel further to reach its final destination, while mail and packages destined for outside the Iron Mountain area may receive better service and be more cost effectively distributed.

Officials say the review will not result in the Iron Mountain facility’s closure or career employee layoffs.

A public meeting will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Kingsford Armory. USPS will share initial results of the study and get public input.

Written comments may be submitted through February 23rd via a survey. You can find it here.
