Lights back on in Westwood Mall

MARQUETTE, MI— Power to Marquette’s Westwood Mall was finally turned back on Monday afternoon, following six days of darkness when the mall’s owner failed to pay the electrical bill.

The Marquette Board of Light and Power cut electricity to the mall last Wednesday. Landlord Mike Kohan of the Kohan Retail Investment Group didn’t send money for the utility bill by the due date, keeping mall stores in the dark.

Kohan also apparently owes Marquette Township $265,987 in outstanding taxes. Officials say if the 2022 taxes aren’t caught up by March 31st of 2025, the property will be closed.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
