LANSING, MI— The Michigan Public Service Commission is urging those who use propane to heat their homes in the winter to lock in contracts now.
The MPSC says customers should shop around for the best deals and research options, ask questions about contracts, and get terms in writing. Officials say those who wait until later in the year risk being surprised by higher costs.
Michiganders use more propane in the residential sector than any other state, and propane use is highest in rural areas. Propane is the primary heating fuel for 18 percent of the Upper Peninsula and nearly 24 percent of some northern Lower Peninsula counties. Overall, propane is used for home heating in 8 percent of homes statewide.
